In this Pixel 9 Pro XL / Fold – Pixel 9 Pro Review, Google’s annual launch of its Pixel devices is usually characterized by incremental hardware updates. However, this year with the Pixel 9 lineup, Google has pushed the limits with arguably the least impressive hardware updates yet, accompanied by a $100 price increase across all models. Let’s delve into the details of these new devices.

The Pixel 9 Lineup: Slab Phones and Foldable

The Pixel 9 series includes three slab phones: the Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, and Pixel 9 Pro XL, alongside a new foldable, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold. Despite the naming suggesting otherwise, the Pixel 9 Pro XL is not larger than previous models, maintaining the same dimensions as last year’s Pixel 8 Pro.

The Pixel 9 Pro, however, introduces a new size in the lineup, matching the Pixel 9 in overall dimensions but offering a slightly larger screen due to thinner bezels.

Google pixel 9 Design and Aesthetics

The design of the Pixel 9 devices has shifted towards a more boxy aesthetic. The curved back of the Pixel 7 and 8 Pro has been replaced with a flat back, resembling the iPhone’s design but retaining the distinct Pixel identity.

A significant change is the camera hump, which replaces the camera bar from previous generations. While this new design looks cleaner, it lacks the iconic visual appeal of the older models.

Hardware and Display Updates

In terms of hardware, the Pixel 9 Pro is slightly thinner yet heavier than its predecessor, featuring a matte finish on the back glass and polished metal rails. Color options include a matte gray “hazel” and vibrant shades like “winter green” and “PE” for the regular Pixel 9 models.

The screens are brighter on paper but the differences were hard to discern under the lighting conditions at the launch event. Notably, the bezels are thinner and even around the display, a first for Pixel devices.

The Pixel 9 Pro Fold: A Mixed Bag

The Pixel 9 Pro Fold, the second iteration of Google’s foldable phone, introduces a new aspect ratio with taller screens, which impacts one-handed operability.

Despite a snappier hinge, the thicker bezels and prominent crease were unexpected for a device priced at $1,800. Google has also added niche features, such as animations on the front screen to engage young children.

AI and Performance Enhancements

All new Pixel phones are powered by Google’s Tensor G4 chip, offering a modest 10% performance boost over the previous generation. RAM capacities have been increased significantly, with the Pixel 9 featuring 12GB and the Pixel 9 Pro models boasting 16GB.

These enhancements aim to support Google’s AI endeavors, such as the “Add Me” camera feature, which allows users to composite photos with everyone included.

Another AI feature, “Pixel Screenshot,” offers a new way to search through your screenshots using conversational prompts. While still in beta, it shows promise but raises privacy concerns regarding data access and targeted advertising.

Final Thoughts: A Pricey Proposition with Limited AI Capabilities

Despite the advanced hardware and AI capabilities promised by the new Pixel 9 devices, the initial presentation of features feels underwhelming. Google’s tendency to release updates gradually might mean more impressive features are on the horizon. However, at the current price point, the AI capabilities seem limited.

We hope to see more developments and enhancements when the devices are officially reviewed. For now, the Pixel 9 lineup presents a blend of modest hardware updates and potential in AI integration.
