What is a Blog?
Definition | Meaning of blog:
A blog (a shortened version of “weblog”) is an online journal or informational website displaying information in reverse chronological order, with the latest posts appearing first, at the top. It is a platform where a writer or a group of writers share their views on an individual subject.
Reason to start a blog.
It’s pretty easy to make an extra $500 – $2,000 per month blogging in your first year. And then in year 2, 3, 4, and 5, you can significantly increase your monthly blog revenue. Glassdoor reports that the average blogger salary is over $32,800 per year, based on several anonymously submitted salaries.
Many of the full-time bloggers that I know are able to make over $200,000 per year and work about 10-30 hours per week.
Blogging can be incredibly valuable to a variety of people and for a variety of reasons. Blogging is not just for businesses! I’ve benefited personally, professionally, and financially from blogging. Writing has actually become one of my favorite hobbies. I recommend blogging to almost everyone I meet. Here are the some of the biggest reasons why I think YOU should should start blogging immediately.
- To Reach out to Audience
Blogging enables you to reach the billions of people that use the Internet. Blogging can help you promote yourself or your business. Blogging works as a method for attracting an audience because it provides something of value to them before asking for anything in return.
What would you rather click on, a page titled “How to Promote Your Blog”, or a page titled “Buy My Consulting Services”? By creating a blog that is of value, you can attract an audience and eventually convert them to customers, partners, friends, or otherwise.
- Blog gives you authority
Having a blog and writing about important topics that are relevant to your audience establishes yourself as an authority in the space. It enhances your professional image. A blog is to professionals in the 2000s what a business card was in the 1990s. Blogs are the new business card today.
Blogging can convert traffic into leads and leads into customers and customers into money. Blogging can “warm up” your cold calls and traffic from other sources. If someone receives your cold call, they may be more receptive if they’ve read your blog and received value from it.
- Blogging creates opportunities.
Blogging can lead to other business/traffic generating opportunities. For example, speaking engagements or press. I’ve had people contact me to speak at conferences who found me through my blog. Blogging enables anyone with something interesting or valuable to say to be identified as an expert.
- Organize Your Thoughts and Learn
Blogging forces you to teach yourself what you don’t know and to articulate what you do know. When you begin writing a blog post, you are forced to organize your thoughts. If there are any gaps in the topic that you are writing about, you will have to learn about it. Writing out and articulating your thoughts is a great way to internalize something you’ve learned or experienced. Writing helps you become more familiar with the topic you’re writing about.
- Blogging helps you to Tell Your Story
Blogging enables you to be your own media company. You can tell your story the way you want to tell it without being dependent on journalists. When you are writing about a topic of your own interest, you can decide how to portray a story, what information to include, and what information to exclude. Blogging allows you to ensure that all information included in the blog is factual.
- Meet New People
The audience you attract through blogging doesn’t have to just be your “audience.” They can become your friends, colleagues, partners, or lovers. I’ve had many people reach out to me directly after reading my blog. Some of those people have become friends or good business contacts.
- Stand Out
According to “the 1 percent rule,” only 1 percent of Internet users actively create new content, while the other 99 percent of the participants simply view it. By blogging, you separate yourself from the 99 percent of people that don’t blog. Standing out is essential in an increasingly competitive economy.
- Validate Expertise
Blogs are the new resumes. Blogging about a topic you would like to be viewed as an expert in, can illustrate to readers, employers, and your network, that you are are skilled and knowledgeable.
- Blogging generates unlimited income.
If you have a blog with a lot of readers, there may be opportunities to monetize. In today’s economy, being diversified and having additional sources of income can be tremendously beneficial. If you are working a job that doesn’t pay as much as you’d like, or if you would simply like to earn more money (who doesn’t?), blogging can make for a great side income. Like I mentioned earlier that you can make over $200,000 blogging per year.
Income generated from blogging can also be “passive,” meaning it can be automated and is not directly correlated to the amount of time you put in to it.
How to start a blog right now.
There are five main points that you need to know for creating the blog of your dreams. you should review this info so that you can get a blog online in 20 minutes or less.
STEP 1 – Choose Your Blog Topic and Name
The very first thing you need to do is choose a topic and a name for your blog.
Most successful blogs focus on one thing, whether it’s food, travel, fitness, fashion, or simply about your business.
Follow these three easy steps to choose a blog topic and find your niche.
- 1. Pick a Topic
We recommend choosing a blog topic that you feel passionate about or interested in. It’s even better when you’re an expert at something, as this helps you to grow your blog through writing quality content to help others.
Ask yourself the questions below and try listing at least 10 topic ideas.
What do I want to learn more about?
Do I have a hobby or passion that I can share?
What do I enjoy writing about?
Am I an expert in something?
Am I passionate about something?
Here’s an example: If you’re interested in fitness and you like to train, it’s wise to share your knowledge in a blog that’s related to fitness or cover topics on training and nutrition. Through the blog, you’ll be able to get new clients.
- 2. Determine Your Niche
Since there are over 700 million blogs on the web, it’s important your niche is as specific as possible. This will help you stand out from the crowd.
Your niche could be a very specific target audience (e.g., high school students in New York City), a specific type of content you’ll share (e.g., step-by-step guides), a subcategory of your topic (e.g., hiking), or a combination of these (e.g., guides for New York City students who like hiking).
- Confirm Market Demand
Once you have a few topic ideas, it’s important to understand whether you’ll be able to monetize your content. Will enough people be interested in what you want to share?
Think of a few keywords related to your topic. You can use tools like Google Keyword Planner and Google Trends to see how popular they are. Alternatively, you can look for online forums in your niche or run surveys to understand the size of your potential audience.
- Choose a Name
Now that you have some topic ideas, you can start brainstorming names for your blog. To make your blog name stand out, keep in mind the following:
Think about your goals: Understanding why you’re creating this blog will help you choose the right name. For example, do you want to share formal, detailed guides, or more informal and short blog posts? Make sure your blog name is not misleading about the type of content you plan on sharing.
Think about your audience: Think about the people you want to read your blog. What name will appeal to them?
Think about your industry: What are the names of the most successful blogs in your niche? Use these for inspiration, but make sure you come up with something original.

STEP 2– Set Up Your Blog Through Web Hosting (and Register Domain Name)
To get started with a self-hosted WordPress blog, you’ll need to buy a domain name and choose a WordPress web hosting.
We’ve tested all major web hosting platforms by looking at price, reliability, performance, features, and security and Bluehost is the best choice for new websites.
From Bluehost, you will get:
Your custom domain name (free for the first year) with an SSL certificate (for security).
Simple, one-click install for WordPress
Free email accounts (e.g., [email protected])
If you choose another web hosting company, make sure it has “one-click installs” for blogging platforms like WordPress. This will make your setup process much easier.
And these hosting platforms are also our top best when it comes to quality and trust.
I recommend JUSTHOST
With hosting plans for shared, VPS, and dedicated servers. Justhost is the kind of hosting provider that you can grow with over time. The best part is that they have a no-frills cancellation policy and a 30-day money-back guarantee. This lowers your risk of losing money and makes JustHost services worth trying.
I recommend CLOWDWAYS
This is another beginners friendly web hosting site. They are so good at it.
STEP 3 – Configure Your WordPress Blog
Once you have your admin account for WordPress all set up, you can proceed to your new dashboard.
Just go to the admin page (e.g., yourblogname.com/wp-admin) and input the access details for your admin account. Once you log in, you are good to go.
Step 4.Create New Pages and Blog Posts
With all of the above already done, you’re ready to start creating content for your new blog.
In the beginning, make sure your blog includes at least the following pages:
Blog: WordPress will create this section for you automatically. By default, all your latest blog posts are going to be listed right on the homepage.
About: Tell your visitors what the blog is about and who’s behind it.
Contact: You can add your contact information or a contact form here.
You can also add a Services / Products page to list your products and/or services and tell people why they should buy them.
Create Content, Launch Your Blog, and Keep Improving
Congratulations. You can now launch your new blog!
Wasn’t so difficult, was it?
Remember that it’s important to be consistent with blogging. Results will come if you post new, high-quality articles regularly.
As a final tip, make sure you look at your blog’s analytics to track results, see which types of content work and which don’t, and make improvements accordingly.
